MODA Announces The Sustainable Home Competition 2006

MODA (Museum of Design Atlanta) has partnered with the Atlanta Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, Southface and Charis Community Housing to bring a special competition to Georgia and its surrounding states.  The need for affordable housing in Atlanta and indeed across the country is a huge concern for many.

Sustainability and the future design of residential communities weigh heavy on the minds of still more.  In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the demand for affordable housing has reached new heights and garnered national and international attention. Sponsored by The Kendeda Fund, The Sustainable Home Competition 2006 will give designers in Georgia and adjacent states the opportunity to voice their solutions to this ever-growing challenge and provide an affordable, sustainable home for a deserving family in Atlanta that can serve as a model for future homes.

Charis Community Housing is a non-profit development corporation that has been providing affordable housing for low-income families in Atlanta since 1981.  Charis has generously provided the lot, 63 Gammons Street in historic South Atlanta, on which the winning home design will be built.

Southface, an organization that promotes sustainable homes, workplaces and communities through education, research, advocacy and technical assistance will lend their expertise, engineers, and equipment to evaluate the submissions on how they improve the quality of life of the family that will make the design their home and how energy efficiency can help lower the cost of ownership and maintenance.  The winning architect will collaborate with the selected builder and assure adherence to Earthcraft standards in the home’s construction.

The Atlanta Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) has written the competition brief, submission guidelines and will oversee the competition through its website- www.aiaatlanta.org .  Jurors will be announced.
